Re: What "Real" Moped Manufacturers are there anymore?

I commuted at least 50 times last year on a 15mph electric garelli conversion with an 8 mile range. I work about 5 miles from home so I'd just plug it in at work. it was pretty satisfying, very quiet. but do the math out:

I can take a shorter route on moped or ebike that saves some money and negates the time difference. 4.8 mi vs 5.2

My sachs at ~65mpg costs me like 43c to get to work and back (assuming 2.60/gal + 100:1 sabre)

vs my samurai at 18mpg on a 5.2 mile trip is like $1.47/trip

and the electric, is about 5 cents worth of electricity, half of which I steal from work.

Then even vs the worst case commuting in my samurai, it'd take me ~3000 miles to break even on the VERY most inexpensively I could possibly build the ebike. or 500 charges, at which point my battery is gonna be falling apart. So even at the most inexpensive possible option for an electric it's not even close to breaking even costwise vs just riding a regular moped, and it's way slower and arguably less convenient. you do skip smelling like gas and it's kinda fun it it's own way.

Scooter Vs Moped – What's the difference?

At 16 you can complete your Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) and legally ride up to a 50cc moped on the road with Learner plates and without a passenger. At 17, you can ride a 125cc motorbike without Learner plates but still cannot carry a passenger. This though can only last for two years when your DL196 (CBT) certificate will expire.

While you can do your CBT again, it’s a false economy and one that will keep you looking like a 16 year-old for as long as you wear those L plates.

Most people will instead look to get a full motorcycle licence and the first choice you’ll have to make is whether it’s an AM Moped Licence or A1 Motorcycle Licence. And if you get to that point you’re likely to ask what the difference is between a moped and a scooter.
