Coco Gauff made a memorable start to her 2025 French Open campaign — not just for her dominant performance, but for a surprising and lighthearted mishap before the match even began.

As the 21-year-old world number two stepped onto the court at Roland Garros to begin her title bid, she quickly realized something crucial was missing: her racquets.

Clearly confused, Gauff signaled to her team in the stands while laughing at the mistake. Despite the unexpected start, the 2023 US Open champion recovered her composure — and her equipment — before dispatching Australia’s Olivia Gadecki 6-2 6-2 in just 71 minutes.

“The most important thing is to play with a racquet,” Gauff joked after the match. “After that, it probably relaxed me going into the match, because it was just such a funny thing. I’m just happy to get through today — and I will remember my racquets for next time.”

Gauff later shared the moment with fans by posting a picture of her handwritten to-do list on X (formerly Twitter), where one unticked item stood out: “put tennis racquets in bag.”

Explaining the mishap to TNT Sports, Gauff said,
“Honestly, I thought they put the racquets in the bag. My side court bag was filled with drinks so it felt like it had enough weight. Then I got on court, and I opened the first zipper — ‘OK, no racquets.’ The second zipper... ‘Oh my God.’ I went on court with no racquets.”

She continued with a laugh,
“I made fun of Frances [Tiafoe] for this in Madrid — now I’ll be quiet. I’m blaming it on my coach.”

Gauff remains undefeated in French Open first-round matches and continues her quest for a maiden title in Paris. Her composed on-court display showed that even unexpected moments won’t disrupt her focus — as long as she remembers to bring her gear.
